How To Pray When Under Spiritual Attack

By Willie Estrada

Today you’re going to learn how to pray when you’re under spiritual attack and the elements needed for a powerful spiritual warfare prayer, but before we begin, I want to clarify that the power is not in the words that you say, but in the Spirit behind them, so don’t get caught up trying to recite prayers as you read them. There are some religions that do that, but there’s no Spirit behind their words, so let’s not get confused.

I understand that you might be new to Christianity, so you’ll need to forget about those things that you might’ve learned before you accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. We need to structure our prayers because, like I said before, we’re not interested in the words that we speak, but our focus should be on the power behind those words.
We must understand that everything that we say has a reaction. Think about our words as a command sent to a computer. A command has a purpose and a message hidden behind it, and so does each word in our spiritual warfare prayer. Everything that we say must have a purpose and a goal.

In a spiritual battle, our main goals are to protect ourselves and to attack, so keep that in mind each time that you pray. You don’t need to do it in any specific order, but you must use the wisdom that God has given you, and wisdom tells us that we must first protect ourselves before we attack, and that’s exactly what we’re going to learn today, so let’s take a look at the elements needed for a powerful spiritual warfare prayer.

Elements of a powerful spiritual warfare prayer

Confess your sins
There’s a strong reason as to why we should confess our sins before we pray. This is an important part, not only for a spiritual warfare prayer but for any type of prayer. The reason why we confess our sins is because God is holy, and He can’t have communion with sin. When we pray, we’re basically having communication with the Lord, but the Holy Spirit won’t be there for us if our sins are in the way.
You don’t need to be specific and give the Spirit details of your sins unless you feel it in your heart, but as long as you confess that you’re a sinner and that you’ve sinned against God, you should be okay. Remember that the Lord knows everything about us, and He knows what you’re going to say even before you say it, so you don’t need to be specific, but you must confess that you’ve sinned.

Repent and ask for forgiveness

After you’ve confessed your sins, you must repent and ask for forgiveness. Confessing your sins without repenting is like building a house without a base. It wouldn’t work, and sooner or later your house would be destroyed by the wind.
Confessing your sins is a passive action, but repentance is an active action, so repenting is vital before you begin to do any kind of prayer. I compare it with the door to a successful prayer because if you don’t repent, you won’t enter into the Holy of Holies. That means that you won’t enter into the communion with God, which is the key to your prayer life.

Cover yourself with the blood of Christ

In my book: Spiritual Warfare Prayer for beginners,  I showed you how to cover yourself with the blood of Christ because covering yourself with his blood is the first thing you should do before you start rebuking the devil. Remember that his blood is like the helmet protecting us from the evil darts of the enemy, but what exactly is the blood of Christ? That’s the big question.

Well, I’ll tell you what it is and why is it so important in our prayer life. The Blood of Jesus is his sacrifice, and therefore, our salvation. This means that when you cover yourself with his blood, you’re taking his sacrifice, which is your salvation, and when the devil sees you, he will see Jesus; that’s why you MUST cover yourself with his blood before you even think about praying.
In Ephesians 6:17, we read: “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.” So, don’t forget to cover yourself with the helmet of the Blood of Christ before you pray.

Attack and rebuke

Now that you have protected yourself from the attacks of the enemy, it's time to counterattack using your mighty weapon, which is the Word of the Lord. As we’ve just read in the Bible verse from Ephesians 6:17, the Word of the Lord says, “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”
So first, the Bible tells us to take the helmet of salvation, and then to use the sword of the Spirit, and it clearly says that the sword of the Spirit is the Word of the Lord. If you’re new to spiritual warfare, you’re probably beginning to get the picture. Rebuking Satan is part of your spiritual war because this is like the “engine” that drives your prayers forward.

Declare victory

After you’ve attacked Satan with the Word of the Lord, you’ll need to seal your victory by declaring it. As we all know, in any war, the victorious army runs to the enemy’s soil and sticks a flag in it. This is done to proclaim the victory, and it’s no different in the spiritual realm. Declaring victory will prevent evil influences from coming back and feel welcome again. This doesn’t mean that they won’t come back eventually, remember that our battle is a constant battle.
In Matthew 12: 43-45, we read, “When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, ‘I will return into my house from whence I came out.’ And when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.” I don’t think I need to say anymore. You must declare victory!

Give thanks
Many of us, when we pray, forget one of the most important elements of our prayers, which is giving thanks for our victory. We pray and do everything right, but in the end, we mess it up because we don’t show our gratitude. This is a small detail, but it’s key to our prayer life because it shows our humbleness and gratitude. In Luke 17: 15-19, we read:
And one of them when he saw that he was healed, turned back and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks; and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, ‘Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? There are none found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.’ And He said unto him, ‘Arise; go thy way. Thy faith hath made thee whole.’” We clearly see that our gratitude will receive the Lord’s approval, and therefore, his blessings, and his blessings are the reward of our prayers.

Pray in the name of Jesus (In the name of the Truth)
The last element of a successful spiritual warfare prayer is to pray in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and there’s a strong reason for it. In the Gospel of John 1:1-5, we read:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life, and that life was the Light of men. And the Light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not.”
As believers, we know that Jesus is the Word of God, and we’ve just read that the Word is the light of men and that the light shines in the darkness, and darkness is the work of evil. This means that when we pray in the name of Jesus, we’re turning the lights on, and the devil, being darkness, has to go, whether he likes it or not.

Now that you’ve learned the key elements to a powerful spiritual warfare prayer, we’re going to take a look at a short prayer, so you can take it as an example to break those evil influences that are affecting you today. I want you to implement these elements in your prayer life. Don’t just pray to pray.

You have to understand what you’re doing. You need to get tough with the devil, but at the same time, you need to fight with the understanding and the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. Get organized in your prayer life, and never forget this: “Words are meaningless if you don’t understand the Spirit behind them.” So let’s get busy. Let’s pray right now and let’s begin the process to set you free from these demonic strongholds that are keeping you hostage today:
“Heavenly Father, I’ve come to you today with a humble heart. I repent for what I have done, and for letting myself fall into the evil lies of the enemy. Help me to forget and to leave my past behind; that my deeds might be erased from history today. Forgive me, Father, renew my spirit, and keep my heart from evil.
Make me a new person, let me walk next to you, and let me be filled with your wisdom and compassion. Forgive those that were around me one day and those that are still present in my life today. Forgive us, Lord, for what we have done. I cover myself with the blood of Jesus. Let his precious blood be my shield today.

I rebuke all evil influences from my past right now; all demonic forces, I rebuke them in the name of Jesus. Satan, I command you to leave now! Get out, in the name that’s above all names; in the name of Jesus! I declare myself free from all past iniquities; I declare victory over my past. I renew my life today, and my spirit is free from any influence from the past. Thank you, Lord! I declare all these things in the name of Jesus, Amen.”

Don’t forget that this prayer is just an example that you can follow, but you can use your own words, as long as you don’t leave out any of the vital elements in order to have victory. You must pray when you feel that you are under any kind of spiritual attack and let the Lord guide you until you find deliverance and freedom in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
